The Clos Henri Otira Sauvignon Blanc 2023 captures the essence of Marlborough through a lens of Burgundian precision and restraint. Named after the Otira River — a wild, untamed current flowing from the Southern Alps to the sea — this wine embodies that same interplay of energy and poise.

From the first swirl, Otira 2023 reveals an expressive bouquet of citrus blossom, kaffir lime, and wild herbs, underpinned by a subtle flinty minerality that speaks of its stony riverbed soils. The palate is finely detailed and textural, combining zesty acidity with gentle weight and a saline, lingering finish. It’s a wine of balance and quiet confidence — vibrant yet composed.

Unlike many Sauvignon Blancs made for early drinking, Otira is crafted with longevity and nuance in mind. Its fruit is hand-harvested from low-yielding vines rooted in free-draining glacial gravels, imparting complexity and mineral tension. Natural lees ageing adds a layer of savoury depth and creaminess that sets it apart from simpler, purely fruit-driven styles. The result is a Sauvignon Blanc that doesn’t shout, but rather unfolds — revealing its character gradually, glass by glass.

The 2023 vintage, marked by cool nights and long ripening, delivered fruit of remarkable purity and balance. It’s a true reflection of place — where Marlborough’s clarity meets the Bourgeois family’s elegant Loire sensibility.

At Clos Henri, every step of the winemaking process is guided by the pursuit of purity and balance. The grapes for Otira 2023 were hand-harvested from estate vineyards in the Wairau Valley, where glacially formed gravels provide perfect drainage and a distinctive mineral backbone. Fruit was gently whole-bunch pressed to preserve its aromatic delicacy, and the juice was allowed to ferment slowly at cool temperatures in stainless steel tanks to capture vibrant citrus and floral notes.

After fermentation, the young wine rested for several months on fine lees, developing a subtle creaminess and savoury depth without losing freshness. No oak was used — the aim was to let the terroir speak clearly and unadorned. The result is a Sauvignon Blanc of precision and grace, where texture and minerality intertwine to create a seamless, lingering finish. With its natural balance and structure, Otira 2023 will evolve beautifully in bottle, gaining complexity over the next five to seven years.

Fresh Goat’s Cheese Tart – a classic match for the wine’s citrus and herbal brightness.

Seared Scallops with Lemon Butter – the acidity enhances the sweetness and richness of the scallops.

Thai Green Curry with Prawns – a vibrant contrast of freshness, spice, and texture.

Asparagus Risotto with Parmesan – complements the wine’s mineral notes and creamy mid-palate.

Grilled Snapper with Salsa Verde – a lively, coastal pairing that amplifies the wine’s saline edge.
